Pierre Cecile Puvis De Chavannes, (Lyon, 1824 – París, 1898), pintor simbolista discípulo de Delacroix y Couture. Su obra La joven Madre, también llamada La Caridad, es un lienzo al óleo de 56 x 47 cm pintado en 1887 que se conserva en el museo de Orsay.
The alegoría de la Caridad en forma de una mujer amamantando o cuidando a varios niños es muy habitual en el arte, denominándose las obras, en ocasiones, como “Alma Parens” (en latín, madre nutricia o madre protectora).
Charity is a Christian virtue, opposed to hatred and animosity. It is one of the three theological virtues along with Faith and Hope. Defined in the words of Christ: "You shall love ... your neighbour as yourself" (Matt 19:19 and 22:39, Mark 12:31 and Luke 10:27), St. Paul equates it with Love and defines it as superior in excellence to the other two virtues (1 Cor 13:13).
