Peter Paul Rubens, Flemish painter (Siegen, 1577 - Antwerp, 1640), leading exponent of the Baroque period. The painting Minerva protects Peace from Mars (Peace and War) 204 x 298 cm, painted around 1630, coinciding with the signing of a peace treaty between Spain and England in which Rubens successfully mediated as a diplomat between Philip IV and Charles I.
Peace, symbolised by Ceres, offers a child the milk from her breast and the fruits of the earth.
