Mother goddess. Isis nursing Horus. Coin, Italy 3rd century
Coin. Isis suckling Horus. Mother goddess. Julia Augusta Domna. Silver Denarius
Dimensions: 15 x 17 x 1 mm
Denarius from 193-211 AD in honour of Julia Augusta Domna, wife of Emperor Septimus Severus and mother of the bloodthirsty Caracalla, who did not hesitate to assassinate her brother in order not to share power. Julia died in 217, depressed and with breast cancer.
On the reverse, Isis, standing, breastfeeding Horus.
Isis, the "Mother Goddess", of whom there are numerous representations breastfeeding her son Horus (Harpocrates) or kings or pharaohs, proves that breastfeeding was highly regarded in ancient Egypt. The cult of Isis spread throughout the Roman world until the 6th century AD. The image of Isis suckling Horus was eventually assimilated by Christianity in the Coptic art of the Bauit wall paintings in the form of Mary as the nursing Virgin or Virgin of Milk (Virgo Lactans, Panagia Galaktotrofusa).
