Ovomaltine advertisement in the French weekly magazine L'Illustration.

Dimensions: 180 x 130 mm

Ovomaltine is a food based on malt, egg, milk and chocolate, created in the first decade of the 20th century by Dr. Albert Wander in Bern. Initially designed as a fortifier to be sold in pharmacies, it was soon marketed throughout Switzerland and other European countries (as Ovaltine in Britain and Ovomaltine in Italy). The company was bought in 1967 by Sandoz, which merged in 1996 with another Swiss company, Ciba-Geigy, to form the Novartis group, whose food division was acquired in 2002 by the British company ABF (Associated British Foods).

In this advertisement in the French weekly Illustration of 02.06.1923 emphasises the fortifying and milk secretion-promoting aspect of the product, giving great importance to breastfeeding for the health of children:
A cup of Ovomaltine shortens convalescence after childbirth and facilitates breastfeeding.

Illustration was the first French-language illustrated weekly. It was published from 1843 to 1944.
A large part of the Ovomaltine advertisement collection has been made possible thanks to the kindness of Mr. Laurent Touchard, a specialist in historical documents and old advertisements in Le Sauze, Grenoble.
