Mayotte native breastfeeding. Mayotte is an island of 375 square kilometres in the Mozambique Channel. It is the only one of the Comoros archipelago that in 1974 voted to remain part of France as an overseas department (DOT) of the French Republic. The Comoros had belonged to France since 1843. Almost 200,000 inhabitants in 2005, 97% Muslim. Language: Mahori, dialect of Swahili; only 351,000 T3T speak the official language, French. Infant mortality rate in 2000 was 62 per 1,000 live births (10 times higher than in the metropolis).
