This image captures well the ambiguous discourse on the female breast in the West. Its dual function, reproductive-nutritional on the one hand and erotic-sensual on the other, is responsible for most of the jokes about breastfeeding. In the West, since the second half of the 20th century, the sensual aspect has been prioritised, to the detriment and censorship of the nutritional one: for decades it was easy to contemplate naked female breasts, but always without breastfeeding.
