Filial piety is the greatest of the virtues of Chinese Confucianism, understood as the love and respect due to parents above all things. Children owe them obedience and must provide for their livelihood throughout their lives. This concept is very influential in the pattern of family life in many East Asian cultures.

There are numerous legends and tales that exemplify filial piety and have been collected over the centuries in storybooks such as "The 24 Examples of Filial Piety", in one of which a woman, Mrs. Tang or Tchang, breastfeeds her elderly mother-in-law who has lost her teeth and cannot tolerate any food.
