Suckling Madonna, Madonna of Humility, Francescuccio Ghissi. Paintings Vatican Museums, Michel 581-5, Yvert 522-6.
Dimensions: 40 x 30 mm
Madonna of Humility, by Francescuccio Ghissi (Florentine school, Gothic art, 13th-14th centuries) This painting in tempera on wood, 36.7 x 21.7 cm, is in the Vatican Museums.
The Our Lady of Humility is a variant of the model of Maria Lactans or Virgin of Milk, in which Mary is humbly seated on a cushion on the ground, nursing her child and generally surrounded by angels. Of Italian origin, possibly in Siena, it was exported by Jaume Serra, a 14th-century Catalan painter, together with his brothers Pere, Francesc and Joan, and his master Ramon Destorrents, who spread it throughout Catalonia and the rest of Spain.
