The Florentine artist Leonardo de Vinci (1452-1519) painted The Virgin and Child, a tempera painting on canvas (transferred from a panel), 42 x 33 cm, which is in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, around 1490. Acquired in 1865 from the collection of Count Antonio Litta of Milan, hence the name "Madonna Litta" by which it is known. Although some experts dispute its authorship, a preparatory drawing of the Virgin, signed by Leonardo, is kept in the Louvre.

This image has been widely used in philately, and can be found on stamps from many countries.

The postcard was published by the Museum in 1997 and is a donation of Dr. De la Cuadra Salcedo, ex-medical director of the Marina Alta Hospital in Denia, who was accredited by the IHAN of WHO-UNICEF from 1999 until its closure in 2009 as a Baby Friendly Hospital.
