Leonardo de Vinci, the Florentine artist (1452-1519) painted, around 1490, The Virgin and Child, a tempera painting on canvas (transferred from a panel), 42 x 33 cm, which is in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. Acquired in 1865 from the collection of Count Antonio Litta of Milan, hence the name Madona Litta by which he is known. Although some experts dispute its authorship, a preparatory drawing of the Virgin, signed by Leonardo, is kept in the Louvre.
This image has been widely used in philately, and can be found on stamps from many countries.
